What is sauna?

A sauna (pronounced: saw-nah) is a small room designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions. Derived from the Finnish sauna. The word “sauna” is also used figuratively to describe an unusually hot or humid environment.

How do you benefit from sauna?

Sauna sessions help soothe your senses while removing toxic metals like sulfuric acid, sodium, cholesterol, lead, nickel and cadmium. Sweating helps the body in releasing the harmful toxins and provides assistance in weight loss by burning calories.

Sauna sessions make the heart beat stronger to send blood to the capillaries and thus it affects the process of burning up of calories. The sweat glands must work to produce the sweat. The act of sweat production requires the burning of a lot of calories. Fats and carbohydrates are converted into calories required to cool the body down once it acquires heat energy from the sauna. It has been scientifically proved that an average person can burn up to 300 calories during a single sauna session. Three hundred calories are equivalent to an average weight training of one hour or jogging for 2 to 4 miles.

Sauna may provide some relief to patients with asthma and chronic bronchitis, and may also alleviate pain and improve joint mobility in patients with rheumatic disease. Saunas can cleanse the epidermis layer of the skin and create a clearer, healthier complexion, according to research at Columbia University. The heat from the sauna opens the pores of the skin allowing sweat to flush out surface impurities and clean pores clogged by dirt and excess sebum (skin oil).

Using a sauna can ease muscular pain after exercising. By increasing blood circulation, saunas dull the ache of muscular tension. Furthermore, the tranquility of a sauna’s environment may temporarily take away the worries of the day and relax the mind.

Some users prefer taking a warm shower beforehand to speed up perspiration in the sauna. When in the sauna users often sit on a towel for hygiene and put a towel over the head if the face feels too hot but the body feels comfortable.
